Cher Sells Out TD Garden & Receives Standing Ovation

Cher descended upon the sold out TD Garden on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, with such force, that shock-waves could be felt as far down as the South Shore.  Fact:  when it comes to Cher, there is no such thing as too much, too big, or over-the-top.  She gave a high power, high fashion performance complete with solid pop hits, at least 10 elaborate costume changes, state of the art staging/props/visuals, and a cast that would make Cirque du Soleil look like amateurs.

I could marvel ad nauseum over every perfect song choice and zany costume, but I would be here forever.  Instead, I would rather share a couple of my favorite moments.  

Highlights:

Cher opened with "Woman's World,"  appearing on a massive pedestal towering over the stage. At first I was not sure what I was looking at, as my eyes had to adjust to the enormity of her entrance.  She was decked out in Egyptian fashion with a gigantic pluming headpiece.   From there she moved effortlessly through decades of hits and outrageous costumes - at one point she was  prancing around on stage with nothing more than pearls, pink pasties, and a g-string.

I got weepy during "And the Beat Goes On" where hundreds of images of Sonny Bono were splashed across the screens.  She then sang "I Got You Babe" as a virtual duet with Sonny.

My favorite song of the evening was "Walking in Memphis."  Cher did not write this song, however, she does it better than anyone I have heard perform it.  Before she started the song, she became serious; her emotion was visible to all on the huge mega-screens.  She explained her deep love and respect for Elvis Presley, and the tremendous influence that he has had on her life and career.  Tears filled my eyes as she belted out the song and paid homage to the King of Rock 'N Roll.  I could hear the gospel in her voice.  Cher, to her credit, has an amazing set of chops.

Special Guests:

Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo opened the show with an incredible performance.  They are celebrating 35 years on on stage together, and a 32 years of marriage.  I am a huge Pat and Neil fan, always have been, and could not think of a better act to prime Cher fans.  

Conclusion:

If glitter is your favorite color, and fabulous is your favorite adjective - then do yourself a favor and go see this show!  It's like nothing else.  Mind-blowing.  Gawdy.  Glamorous.  I have never seen so much sparkle and sequins in one concentrated spot in my entire life. Ponce de Leon may not have found the Fountain of Youth, but Cher certainly has.  It's official, her body is the 8th wonder of the world.
